Commentary: Jeff Garcia=Hero!?
by Phil Brody
The great thing about fantasy football is that so many leagues are alike. You can be talking with a friend that lives across the country and express your frustration at Jeff Garcia’s Rocky Balboa-like performance last night on MNF and lament how it ruined your chance at a playoff spot in your fantasy league and your friend will say, “Same thing happened in my league to a buddy of mine.”
How great is that?
Similarities abound, from average draft position (Edgerrin James, #6 player selected overall) to waiver wire steals (Colston, Cotchery, Berrian after Week One) to even common trades (Travis Henry for Randy Moss anyone).
It’s like that 100 Monkeys Theory that if someone is thinking it or doing something in one place, it’s most likely being repeated elsewhere. Granted, the majority of us also subscribe to the same magazines, watch the same sports network and surf the same fantasy sites, but it’s still a cool theory and one that I think applies to fantasy football.
It’s another in a myriad of reason I love this game and am sad we have already arrived at the time for the fantasy playoffs.
So you know, I made the playoffs in my most important league. I sneaked in as a result of Jeff Garcia’s stellar performance last night. I did not have him. My opponent did not have him. However, my opponent had and started the Carolina D. Going into the game, I was on the ropes, clinging to a slim six-point lead. In the game, the CAR D achieved a single fantasy point. One point. How often does that happen when you need it to happen? Given what I said above, I’m betting it happened a lot across the country.
In my book, Garcia vs. The Carolina D equals Balboa vs. Clubber Lang (the rematch, mind you).
I won by 5, netting the final playoff spot. I’m dancing. Whew! Can’t believe I’m in. Can’t believe my luck.
In the spirit of the season, in this case the end of the fantasy football regular season, I want to dish out a few awards. These are my overall feelings. Agree or disagree, I’d love to hear your thoughts.
