Week Six: Who Wants To Be A Supervillain?

I just figured it out. Took me five weeks, but I finally figured it out. Smart like that, I am. The year, this year. I figured about the theme of the year.

Forget the year of the running back, the year of the wide receiver or the quarterback. 2006 is none of that. It’s the Year of the D! You all thought that team in your league that drafted the Ravens in the fifth round in 2004 and 2005 or the Bears in the fourth this year was selling crazy door to door, when actually they were just ahead of their time, and, my friends, that time is now.

Bears, 18 points. Panthers, 17 points. Vikings, 25 points. Eagles, 23 points. Jaguars, 24 points. (Numbers depend on your league’s scoring, of course, but these numbers are according to a standard scoring system.)

Wow. With this position putting up those kinds of numbers, I suspect if you don’t have a defense that’s scoring, you’re not winning.

Call me crazy or tell me I know nothing, but I don’t ever recall Defenses scoring at this rate. Can it continue? I think so. After all, did the year of the receiver, running back or QB end in Week Six? No, it did not. Which makes me believe the Year of the D is just beginning.

Got D? You better hope so. This might be the year it just might be a necessity.

Also: Who Wants To Be A Supervillain? In a year where D’s are scoring like villains, those in search of the supervillains of year’s past (LT, Alexander, LJ, Tiki), might be out of luck. No one seems to want to step up this year. LT looks mortal. LJ has whiplash. Alexander stepped on a crack. Tiki is boring. The only one’s who’s looking to cause trouble week in and week out is Frank Gore. Again, the guy runs like a villain and, if he holds onto the ball, he might just be(come) a 2006 Supervillain.
